Cheese Champion Tracey Colley Honoured for Exceptional Service to the Cheese Industry
Tracey Colley, one of the Founding Directors of the Academy of Cheese, has been bestowed with the prestigious title of Chevalier in the Ordre du Mérite Agricole by the French Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty. The distinguished award, presented on January 21, 2025, at a special ceremony held at the French Embassy in London, recognises Tracey’s outstanding contributions to the cheese industry over the course of her 20-year career.

Who are the Ordre du Mérite Agricole?
The Ordre du Mérite Agricole (Order of Agricultural Merit), which was established in 1883, is a French honour recognising individuals who have made exceptional contributions to agriculture and related fields. With its three levels – Knight (Chevalier), Officer, and Commander – the award is one of France’s highest civilian honours. Tracey joins a select group of industry leaders who have received this accolade, including Christophe Sire from Savencia Fromage & Dairy.
As the driving force behind the Academy of Cheese, Tracey has played a pivotal role in elevating the profile of cheese on the global stage. Through the Academy, a non-profit organisation she founded to promote the art, science, and appreciation of cheese, Tracey has created invaluable platforms for education and training. Her initiatives have helped cheesemongers, cheesemakers, and cheese lovers alike deepen their understanding of cheese as both an artisanal craft and a global culinary treasure.
Championing Sustainability in Cheesemaking
In particular, the Academy’s certification programmes and events have been vital in nurturing the next generation of cheese professionals. Tracey’s tireless work has not only championed British cheese but has also highlighted the importance of sustainable farming practices, showcasing the link between quality milk production, cheesemaking, and the environmental impact of agriculture.

Mary Quicke, a fellow Director of the Academy of Cheese and an influential figure in the UK cheese scene, expressed her admiration for Tracey’s achievements:
“Tracey is a lifelong advocate of artisan cheese. She started her career running Deli on the Square in Ludlow, where she championed the finest local and British cheeses. Later, in a senior role at distributor Harvey and Brockless, she built a reputation as a leading figure in the cheese industry. But it was her creation of the Academy of Cheese that truly transformed the landscape of cheese education. Tracey is passionate, committed, and hardworking – a true advocate for great cheese and all the wonderful people who make it happen. She is also one of the most warm, supportive individuals I know.”

French Ambassador, Hélène Treheux-Duchêne, presents the award
Tracey’s award was delivered in a letter from Hélène Treheux-Duchêne, the French Ambassador to the UK, who congratulated her on this remarkable recognition. In response, Tracey humbly acknowledged the honour, stating:
“The award is a fantastic accolade not just for me, but for the entire cheese industry. It recognises the hard work of farmers and cheesemakers, as well as those of us who promote and sell cheese. I am determined to inspire and encourage new generations to truly understand and appreciate cheese, not just as a food but as something that defines cultures, landscapes, and brings health and happiness to many.”
A Global Cheese Advocate
Tracey’s recognition as a Chevalier in the Ordre du Mérite Agricole places her alongside past recipients who have made monumental contributions to agriculture, including renowned scientist Louis Pasteur and French TV presenter Karine Lemarchand. Her inclusion in this esteemed group reflects her ongoing dedication to advancing the global appreciation of cheese and her exceptional work in shaping the future of the industry.
I’d like to express my gratitude to my fellow Directors and the entire Academy Team for their dedication and hard work in advancing cheese education across the globe. This award brings international recognition to the Academy of Cheese, offering us a unique opportunity to build new partnerships with cheesemakers and industry leaders worldwide.
Tracey Colley
As the cheese world continues to grow and evolve, Tracey Colley’s impact remains undeniable. Through her leadership at the Academy of Cheese and her unyielding passion for the craft, she is inspiring future generations to appreciate the complexities of cheese and the traditions that make it such a beloved food worldwide.

Please join us in congratulating Tracey Colley on this incredible achievement!
