From Market Cheesemonger to Dutch Cheese Champion
Jorian's career in cheese began remarkably early: at just 13, he started helping a local cheesemonger on the Dutch market in his hometown. What began as a side job quickly developed into a passion and, over the following years, he progressed to become one of the main cheesemongers on the team, gaining experience across retail, wholesale, warehousing and distribution.
After dropping out of college, Jorian started his own company at the age of 18. He has since built Kaashandel Torn Broers around his own vision, initially operating from a mobile cheese stand. Almost nine years on, the business has continued to grow, with Jorian now working alongside his brother and a colleague. In 2026, they opened two cheese shops in the Netherlands, in Woudenberg and Wageningen, marking a new chapter for the business and its ambition to bring great cheese to an ever-wider audience.
Alongside his work as a cheesemonger and business owner, Jorian has developed a strong reputation for his cheese tasting ability. In 2023, he won a Silver medal at the NNKC (Nederlands Nationaal KaasKeur Concours), one of the Netherlands’ major cheese tasting competitions. His brother went on to win Gold in 2024, before Jorian took the Gold medal himself in 2025, winning against more than 750 competitors from across the Dutch cheese industry. That same year, he also won the Young Talent Award at the BKKC (Buitenlands KaasKeur Concours), recognising his skills in tasting foreign cheeses.
Jorian is currently continuing his cheese education, having completed Academy of Cheese Level 1 and working towards Level 2, alongside his Cheese State University certificate and HACCP certification. His approach to cheesemongering is firmly customer-focused: he enjoys making people happy with a good piece of cheese, thoughtful pairing advice and a smile. His ambition is straightforward — to become the best cheesemonger in the Netherlands.
