The Rennet Works

Award-winning Cheese Maker Mathew Lloyd creates exclusive & bespoke cheeses for discerning customers.
About The Rennet Works

Award-winning cheesemaker

The Rennet Works' proprietor, Mathew Lloyd is an avid cheese lover and has been making cheese since 2019, after a family member bought him a simple cheese-making kit for Christmas. Mostly self-taught, Mat has gained a great deal of knowledge from books and online reference points. In 2024, he was awarded a Chiswick Cheese Market Cheesemaker's Grant, in association with the Academy of Cheese, giving him access to cheesemaking knowledge and consultancy. The Rennet Works, based in Gobowen, near Oswestry, makes a wide variety of cheeses from Mediterranean and European-styles cheeses, some of which he smokes to create visually stunning products. His main focus is on producing traditional cheese and then elevating them aesthetically and flavour-wise to new levels.

His cheeses are already winning awards, most recently picking up Bronze and Silver for his blues, Shropshire Knight and Kaleidoscope Blue, at the World Cheese Awards 2026 in Switzerland. Having made and experimented with many styles of cheese, Mat is currently in the process of honing down a selection of short and longer-maturation cheeses for sale as well as offering a bespoke custom service where people can have a cheese made specifically for a loved one or occasion via a pick list of options.
